Soldiers give their lives to protect the rights and freedom of the United States of America. Our elected officials should not be taking those rights away. "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance."

I can't put myself in the shoes of those family members. But if I had to guess, I would say they want the world to know their loved one died fighting for this country. Michele Wittmer's family comes to mind.

But beyond that, whether you think the media should take those photos, or for that matter write about rape, murder, and other painful subjects, is not the point. The point is whether the government should dictate to the press what they can and cannot do. The first amendment to the consitution guarantees us the right to free speech.

Guess I haven't been here in a while! :) I was inspired to return by reading Dave Barry's blog
How can he be so consistently funny?

I'm nice and toasty now, but that was not the case a few hours ago. We had no heat last night! A trusty repairman from the NSTAR utility company showed up at 1 o'clock in the morning to take a look. He reset the thing-ma-bob, and bingo! the furnace started right up. When David woke up at 5 am shivering, he knew all was not well. 4 hours later, another repairman came and fixed the doo-hickey. It's noon, my office is warm, and all is well with the world,... Well, I better take a shower now, while I'm certain of hot water. Just in case.

This week's "Antique Trader" magazine (September 26) has a headline, "Collapse of Collecting? - Tragedy May Impact Antiques Marketplace." There is lots of speculation that the tragedy may adversely affect the sales of collectibles.

The 2 weeks following the tragedy were gloomy indeed. Who felt like doing anything? But things are getting back to normal. I've seen bidding activity pick up on my auctions. I think we all are looking for distractions. And collecting is so important to many of us. It is part art, part science, part history-lesson. I think we can all feel okay about going back online. So much money has been donated online, so many stories shared online.

Things may change - we can't look into the future and know what will happen.

But I tend to be an optimist!
