"It has been my experience that journalists already know what kind of article they’re going to write before they call you for comments. They certainly don’t want you to tell them what to write. Instead, they’re looking for quotes that support the points they’re trying to make in their article.

"Usually I spend some time at the start of each conversation with a reporter to find out what kind of story they’re writing. This helps me make sure my comments fit in the context of the article. Knowing what the reporter is up to can do wonders to avoid unpleasant surprises or misrepresentations. "
